Stay Safe At Railroad Crossings: West Hartford PD

The West Hartford Police Department Tuesday will participate in a national campaign aimed at safety awareness around railroad crossings.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — As part of a national effort to promote safety around rail crossings, the West Hartford Police Department will be visible Tuesday at one busy rail crossing as part of the campaign.

The WHPD will set up a station at Oakwood Avenue's railroad crossing to promote safety and provide lifesaving information. The rain date is Wednesday, Sept. 25.

It is part of the national "See Tracks? Think Train Week," which is Sept. 23-29.

Joining the WHPD in the initiative will be national rail safety education nonprofit Operation Lifesaver Inc., the Amtrak Police Department, and hundreds of local, state, federal and railroad law enforcement departments across the nation.

The goal is to raise awareness and enforce railroad grade crossing and trespassing laws across the U.S.

"During Operation Clear Track, first responders will be stationed at targeted railroad grade crossings and other locations sharing the rail safety message with their community," reads an event announcement.

According to the initiative, federal statistics show that every three hours in the United States a person or vehicle is hit by a train.
