WEST HARTFORD, CT — On Wednesday, April 4, fourth-and-fifth-grade students from Aiken Elementary School participated in the school’s Science Fair. The event, which was held at King Philip Middle School, enabled students to display a host of different science projects and to compete for prizes.

Students displayed their projects on tri-fold boards, each comprised of the research question, hypothesis and the results of the experiment. This project encouraged students to use the scientific method to explore their question by researching the topic, forming and testing the hypothesis, and reporting the collected data.

Stacy Millman, a parent who has organized the fair for the past five years, and teacher Liaison Traci McGowan conducted two meetings prior to the science fair in order to offer students assistance with their projects.

“The students always amaze me with their final projects,” Millman said.

Teams of two judges scored each project. While all students were awarded medals for their work, the judges chose six projects to receive a prize for recognition of exceeding the assignment’s expectations.

Prize winners (from left to right): Zachary Carmona, Dalin Fotache, Abigail Baker, Aarav Mathur, Ava Tringali, and Grace Braidich.

Students explored their interests and learned how to properly utilize the scientific method. For example, projects were entitled “Slime Time” and “The Mystery of Skittles and Liquids.”

“What I love about the science fair is that by participating, the students not only gain experience conducting a scientific experiment, but they also get to practice time management, presentation skills and public speaking,” Millman said.
