WEST HARTFORD, CT — Applications are now open for state and local property tax relief programs available to eligible West Hartford seniors and residents with disabilities, with a deadline of May 15.

Homeowners who were 65 or older as of Dec. 31, 2025, or who are 100% disabled through Social Security, may qualify if they meet income limits.

The maximum annual income is $46,300 for individuals and $56,500 for married couples.

Applicants must apply in person at the Assessor’s Office in Room 142 of West Hartford Town Hall and provide documentation of all 2025 income. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

“I want our elderly homeowners to get what they deserve. I don’t want anyone missing out only because they were not aware of the opportunities that exist for them,” said Joseph Dakers, West Hartford's town assessor.

Dakers said first-time applicants will receive in-person assistance.

“The application process is simple. For first-time applicants, our friendly staff will meet with you and review all your documents, look at the property record card, and then determine right then and there which programs you qualify for,” he said.

The tax credit is based on income and follows a sliding scale.

Benefits range from a minimum of $150 to a maximum of $1,000 for single applicants and $1,250 for married couples.

State requirements mandate documentation of all income, including Social Security 1099 forms, 2025 tax returns, or alternative 1099 forms if no return was filed, as well as any applicable W-2s and rental income records.

In addition to state programs, the town is accepting applications for its Local Elderly Homeowners Tax Freeze Program through May 15. That program is available to residents age 70 and older who owned and occupied their property as of Oct. 1, 2025, have lived in Connecticut for at least one year, and meet the same income thresholds.

Approved participants will have their property taxes frozen at the amount due for the 2025 Grand List, payable in July 2026 and January 2027. The benefit must be renewed every two years.

Town officials said participation in the local tax freeze program does not affect eligibility for other tax relief benefits.
