So you want to increase your fitness in the new year, but have never worked out. Start here to ensure a safe start to your New Years resolution.
For the average gym newbie, the rush to submerge their self into the latest fad workout, or diet “phenomenon” inevitably leads to another failed New Years Resolution. The truth is most individuals who are new to the fitness world; or have been “removed” from the fitness world should start with the basics.
What are the basics?
Good question. When most people think of the basics, visions of pushups, crunches and pull-ups come to mind. Realistically, we’re going even more basic than that. We’re going back to balance and stabilization exercises.

How will “balance and stabilization” exercises help me lose weight?
Well, imagine the first time you rode a bike. You wanted to go fast and over bumps, but you couldn't even balance. The same is true with weight lifting and working out. You want to squat with additional weight and press weight in every which direction; but you can’t move you OWN bodyweight safely.

Practice moving your own body weight with good form. If you’re unsure what good form is, contact a local professional or the fitness centers staff. Their should be a Certified Trainer on staff. Once you’ve mastered good form, with both feet on the ground; challenge yourself and use one leg. Have you mastered it with a single leg? Your next progression is with 2 legs on a stability tool (balance board, BOSU ball etc). Once you’ve become comfortable through the progressions (which will be challenging) then add weight.
Starting with the basics of balance and stabilization will accomplish a few different objectives:
- increase balance and joint stability
- ensure proper movement
- help identify and correct muscular imbalances
- increase core strength
By working with the basics, you are creating the necessary base to pursue your fitness goals.
