West Hartford DAR Chapter Honors 'Good Citizens' From Area High Schools

High school seniors from West Hartford, Farmington, Newington, and Berlin were honored Feb. 21.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — High school seniors from multiple schools in the area received prestigious honors from the Daughters of the American Revolution last week.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution’s Sarah Whitman Hooker Chapter in West Hartford recognized six local high school seniors during its annual Good Citizen Award ceremony on Feb. 21 at the Noah Webster Public Library in West Hartford.

Students from Berlin High School, Conard High School (West Hartford), Farmington High School, Hall High School (West Hartford), Newington High School, and Northwest Catholic High School (West Hartford) were nominated by their schools for demonstrating dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.

The DAR Good Citizen Program and Scholarship Contest encourages and rewards qualities of good citizenship.

Nominees are eligible to participate in a juried essay contest.

This year’s essay, titled “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving it,” asked students to “Describe how the characteristics of a good citizen help to renew and strengthen the democracy achieved by the periods of the American Revolution.”

Students honored at the ceremony were:

  • Brigid Feeney, Conard High School
  • Victoria Melzen, Farmington High School
  • Yasmine Benhamouche, Hall High School
  • Adrian Bielski, Newington High School, who also received the essay award.
  • Lucy Minion, Northwest Catholic High School

Ryan Lavendar of Berlin High School was unable to attend.

Judi Friedman and Heidi Sweeney, co-chairs of the Good Citizen Award for the Sarah Whitman Hooker Chapter, presented the honors.
