West Hartford Firefighter Earns Major Honor

He was recently named 'Firefighter of the Year' by a local civic group.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — West Hartford Fire Department apparatus operator/EMG Bill Shappert recently garnered a major award for his firefighting prowess.

The West Hartford Exchange Club recently named Shappert as the 2023 "Firefighter of the Year."

West Hartford Firefighters Local 1241 issued an announcement praising the Shappert and the decision to award him.

"AO Schappert has been instrumental in both department readiness and community outreach. He served as the public resource officer during Covid," wrote the union via social media.

Local 1241 said Shappert has also been a "longstanding paramedic preceptor and he worked tirelessly to ensure West Hartford could regain the Heart Safe Community status."
