West Hartford Firefighters Honor Fallen North Haven Fireman

The 46-year-old died early Monday morning battling a blaze.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Local firefighters Monday pledged support for the North Haven Fire Department, which tragically lost one of their own at a fire Monday morning, the day after Christmas.

North Haven firefighter Matthias Wirtz, 46, a veteran firefighter, died Monday battling a blaze early Monday morning on Quinnipia Avenue in North Haven.

Shortly after the tragedy was announced, the West Hartford firefighters union made it clear their firefighting brethren in North Haven are not lost on them.

West Hartford Firefighters Local 1241 said it "is deeply saddened by the news this morning of a Line Of Duty Death in North Haven, CT overnight."

"Please keep our brother/sister firefighter, their family, colleagues and friends in your thoughts during this difficult time," wrote the union via social media.
