West Hartford Holocaust Remembrance Event To Feature Survivor Of Nazi Genocide

West Hartford's Yom HaShoah commemoration is this weekend, registration required, no walk-ins.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A community-wide observance of Yom HaShoah will take place Sunday, April 12, bringing together clergy of multiple faiths and residents for remembrance and reflection.

The event, scheduled for 3 p.m., will feature Holocaust survivor Nina Jacobs as the keynote speaker.

Organizers said the program is intended to honor the six million Jewish victims of the Holocaust and recognize the enduring impact on survivors and their families.

Earlier in the day, at 1:30 p.m., attendees will begin reading the names of community members’ relatives who perished, as well as those of surviving community members who have since died.

A dedication of the Daffodil Living Holocaust Memorial Garden will follow.

The commemoration is sponsored by Mandell Jewish Community Center in West Hartford, Voices of Hope, and Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford.

Organizers emphasized that advance registration is required and that no walk-ins will be permitted due to security protocols.

The event location in West Hartford will be shared with registrants prior to the program.

Security personnel will be present, and backpacks are not allowed.

Participants interested in joining the procession or submitting names for the memorial reading are asked to contact organizers via email in advance at debbie@ctvoicesofhope.org.

Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $18.

Yom HaShoah, established in 1959 by Israel’s parliament, is observed annually on the 27th day of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar, typically falling in April or May.

The day is marked worldwide with memorial ceremonies dedicated to victims of Nazi persecution.
