West Hartford Kidnapping Suspect Taken Into Custody

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Police across several agencies — including a SWAT team — took a West Hartford kidnapping suspect into custody Tuesday.

At 10:19 a.m. Tuesday, Wethersfield police information that 42-year-old Edward Casares, wanted on felony kidnapping charges out of West Hartford, was staying at the Motel 6 at 1341 Silas Deane Highway, according to an incident report.

He was being uncooperative and police believed he could have a gun, the report indicated.

Wethersfield Police and the West Hartford Police Departments "worked jointly to resolve the issue" and called in the Capital Region Emergency Services Team and West Hartford Police Department’s Emergency Services Unit. CREST negotiators made contact with Caseras and, a short time later, he surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, according to the report.

Police said the warrant for Casares originated from a December incident during which he us accused of assaulting someone, then driving away with that person and a child while refusing to let them out of the vehicle.

He knew both of them, according to the warrant.

"Due to the nature of the case and victim age, no further details are being released," police said.

Casares, of Hartford, was charged with:

  • 2 counts of second-degree kidnapping
  • Risk of injury to a child
  • Third-degree assault
  • Second-degree breach of peace
  • Illegal operation of a motor vehicle under suspension

As of Friday night, Casares was being held at WHPD Headquarters on a $150,000 surety bond. He is expected to be presented in Hartford Superior Court Wednesday, police said.

Additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.
