Threat Probed At School For Deaf, WeHa Campus Deemed 'Safe': UPDATE

Local officers at the American School for the Deaf's West Hartford campus are investigating a threat made against the school.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — Officials with the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford said Tuesday afternoon the campus has been deemed safe following a threat made against the school.

ASD Director of Institutional Advancement Liz DeRosa said the West Hartford Police Department was called after "we learned of a threat made against our campus."

This, she said, prompted ASD's "security procedures" to go into action.

Ultimately, nothing dangerous was found and school operations returned to normal, she said.

"After a thorough search, the campus was deemed secure and the threat was cleared. All students and staff are safe and we have resumed normal activity," DeRosa said.

Local police said late this morning they were at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford to investigate that.

At 11:16 a.m., the West Hartford Police Department reported via "X" (formerly Twitter) that it was at the campus located at 139 N. Main St., West Hartford.

Details were still scarce, but police said there was an "active investigation" ongoing.

Later in the afternoon, the WHPD said the threat was "determined to have been unfounded."

"There is nothing to indicate any substantiated threat to the public," wrote police.

The area was quickly cleared, but police said the investigation into what precipitated their action remains ongoing.

The American School for the Deaf — also referred to as "ASD" — serves the deaf and those hard of hearing with a variety of educational services from birth through adulthood.
