WEST HARTFORD, CT — Area college students looking into careers in law enforcement might want to drop the West Hartford Police Department a line.

That's because the department this week said its looking for applicants for its "Behind the Badge: College Police Academy" internship program.

It will take place Monday, June 19, to Friday, July 7, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the WHPD.

The program will feature several courses, including lessons on: daily police procedures; hiring proecss procedures; physical training; and crime scene investigations, among other aspects of police work.

It is specifically designed for college students to provide them with an inside look at potential career opportunities and the profession and, at the same time, offer an accurate look at police work.

"Hollywood and the media portray law enforcement careers as one of high speed chases, crime scenes and investigations where criminals are tried and convicted all before the commercial break," writes the WHPD on the Town of West Hartford website.

"The objective of this program is to address the misconceptions of police work and give students a realistic snapshot of what a career in law enforcement really entails."
