WEST HARTFORD, CT — Local schoolchildren might not want to admit it, but the summer is already about half over, with the first day of classes starting Aug. 31.

As a result, West Hartford Public Schools are urging youngsters to participate in summer reading and math programs to make sure their learning skills don't dull with the summer sun.

For example, the school system said students in grades pre-K through fifth-grade have summer reading logs that they can complete by next month.
