West Hartford Teen Sustains Traumatic Brain Injury While Sledding

A West Hartford teen recently sustained a serious traumatic brain injury as a result of a sledding accident.

WEST HARTFORD, CT — A West Hartford teen recently sustained a serious traumatic brain injury as a result of a sledding accident. Now his family is asking for help as his mother takes time off from work to care for her injured son.

According to a GoFundMe page set up in his honor, Griffin Reid was involved in a sledding accident at Springfield College on Jan. 4. As a result of the accident, he sustained a serious traumatic brain injury and spent several days recovering in the hospital.

Reid was recently transferred to a rehabilitation facility in New Britain, where it was discovered he had an additional infection in his mouth due to cuts sustained in the accident. He was quickly rushed to Hartford Hospital on Friday for emergency surgery to drain the infection.

As is common with brain injuries, there is currently no prognosis for Ried's situation, however his family is hoping he will recover and have 100 percent of his faculties restored. Reid's widowed mother of three, Julie, is currently caring for her son and plans to be with him as much as possible during his difficult journey.

According to the page, Julie Reid works as a "per diem" employee and is not paid if she is unable to work. Due to this, the family is reaching out through GoFundMe asking for any help members of the community can offer.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the page has raised $12,848 of a $30,000 goal in four days. Anyone who wishes to donate to family's page can do so directly at GoFundMe.
