West Hartford's Justina Pelletier Rushed to Hospital

Teen was at center of a back-and-forth custody battle after spending 16 months in Massachusetts for state-forced hospitalization.

West Hartford’s Justina Pelletier was rushed to the hospital Sunday night with severe pain from a G.I. issue, according to multiple reports.

Pelletier, 16, was at the center of a back-and-forth custody battle after spending 16 months in Massachusetts after the state forced her hospitalization there.

Rev. Patrick Mahoney, a spokesman for the family, said that Pelletier was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital on Sept. 27, according to WFSB 3.

The A Miracle for Justina Facebook page posted an update on Monday morning that Pelletier came home on Friday but had to go back last night.

Pelletier returned home from the state-forced hospitalization following a June 17 ruling by Massachusetts Judge Joseph Johnson ordering the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families to release the teen to her parents.

The teen has been in the focus of a national debate on parental rights since the Massachusetts DCF took custody of her more than a year ago, despite pleas from her family, thousands of supporters, a social media campaign and support from Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.

The DCF took custody of her in February 2013 after her family disagreed with a diagnosis and treatment by doctors at Boston Children’s Hospital.
