Why Do Dogs Tilt Their Heads?

People ask me this question all of the time. Yes, I do consider my team at West Hartford Pet Sitters to be Pet Experts. We are around dogs and cats every day. We see all types of breeds, dispositions, personalities, quirks and sometimes, illnesses. So, we know a thing or two about dogs.

Dogs tilt their heads for many reasons. One theory is they tilt their heads to hear better. The ear is more exposed in their upward tilted position.

They have also learned that they will get positive reinforcement when they do this "trick." Most people will respond with a warm, "Aw, how cute!" accompanied by a smile.

The theory that I’ve tested and believe is most accurate is that dogs tilt their head when they hear a strange sound. Humor me here... Make a weird meow sound while looking at your dog and see if he tilts his head. It works 95 percent of the time!
