Is the relative peace experienced by the Western world since World War II in jeopardy? Duncaster will host a free public forum about this topic on Tuesday, Jan. 9 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. It is open to the public with preregistration.
The discussion will look at what is called “Pax Americana.” This is the idea of relative peace in the Western Hemisphere, and later the world, that began around the middle of the 20th century. It is thought to be caused by the dominance of power held by the United States. “We will look at whether the future of this peace is threatened by current events,” says World Affairs moderator, Herb Hershenson. “Pax Americana is based upon U.S. values and principles. It is a system based on the liberal values of open seas, free trade and capital flows centered on the U.S. dollar, as well as respect for international law and human rights. In recent years, Pax Americana has faced a growing number of challenges both from without and within. Many events have led to the unraveling of both the economic order and the security order. The future of Pax Americana is in question today.”
The discussion is part of Duncaster’s World Affairs Series, which is presented to the community by the residents of Duncaster on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month. Participants include Duncaster residents, as well as local citizens.
