DUI Driver Crashes Into Police Cruiser, Injures Sergeant: West Haven Police

Police said a witness had been following the vehicle due to erratic driving and was attempting to contact State Police prior to the crash.

WEST HAVEN, CT — A Bridgeport man is accused of crashing into a West Haven police cruiser, and injuring a sergeant, while operating under the influence early Sunday morning, according to police.

Police said the sergeant, who wasn’t immediately identified, was traveling north on Campbell Avenue at about 2:21 a.m. on June 5 when the operator of a minivan turned left in front of the cruiser and caused a collision.

The sergeant was transported to an area hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries, according to police.

Police said there were three witnesses to the accident, including one who was following the minivan on I-95 north and was attempting to contact Connecticut State Police because of the erratic driving.

The witness continued to follow the minivan when it exited I-95 onto Campbell Avenue and struck the police vehicle.

Arriving officers arriving found the other operator Teixeria Marcal, who refused medical attention, according to police.

Police said Marcal failed field sobriety testing and was placed under arrest and transported to headquarters where he also failed Intoxilizer testing.

Marcal, of Birmingham Avenue in Bridgeport, was charged with operation under the influence, operating without a license, operating with no insurance and improper turn.
