Obituary: Walter Steinau, 94, of West Haven

Walter worked at Norden and Sikorsky Aircraft as a tool and die maker. He was active with the Boy Scouts and West Haven Police Auxiliary.

WEST HAVE, CT - (From West Haven Funeral Home): Walter Steinau, 94, of West Haven entered into rest on August 15, 2020. He is survived by his wife, Christa Ascher Steinau.

Walter was the father of Walter Steinau of Nevada and Richard E. (Barbara) Steinau of Florida, as well as 5 stepchildren, and he was Grandpa Cookie to 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Walter was pre-deceased by his sisters Alexhandra and Tammara, and by his previous wives Bertrun Jacobi Steinau and Gertrude Ottens Steinau.

Walter worked at Norden and later at Sikorsky Aircraft as a tool and die maker for 35 years until his retirement in 1991. He was extremely skilled at his craft and beyond; he could fix just about anything.

His favorite pastimes included traveling, skiing, and camping. He loved getting together with family and friends - being surrounded by people always made Walter happy. All who knew him can attest to the fact that he was always ready to lend advice or a helping hand to anyone in need.

He was active in the community with the Boy Scouts of America and the West Haven Police Auxiliary and was a member of the New Haven Ski Club, Arbeiter Maenner Chor, and Harugari Singing Society. Walter had many dogs over the years and loved all of them dearly.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the West Haven Funeral Home at the green. All other services are private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Harugari Singing Society, 66 Highland Street, West Haven, CT 06516 or to Animal Haven, 89 Mill Road, North Haven, CT 06473.
