West Haven Police Officer Seriously Injured in N.Y. Crash is ‘Coming Home’

Officer Mike Doyle, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in New York, will be escorted by a large police caravan on his way home.

West Haven, CT — Less than 24 hours after updating that injured Officer Mike Doyle was showing “remarkable improvement” in his recovery from a serious motorcycle accident, the West Haven Police Department announced that he is coming home.

Doyle, who has been treated at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York, is expected to begin his trip back to Connecticut around 2 p.m., according to police.

“Plans are that Officer Mike Doyle will start his trip and be escorted to Gaylord Rehabilitation Center, from NY via I-95 sometime around 2 p.m. today,” police said in a Facebook post. “His transport vehicle will be escorted by a large police caravan made up of WHPD, Yonkers Police Department and other New York area Police Departments as a show of support. Mike has a long road ahead but, our brother is coming home.”

Doyle, 34, had been hospitalized in the intensive care unit after being seriously injured in a crash on the Taconic State Parkway on June 22 while participating in a motorcycle training class with the Yonkers, N.Y. Police Department.

Doyle, an eight-year member of the department, was launched from his motorcycle onto the pavement when he was struck by a vehicle merging onto the parkway. He was participating in the training exercise with about 25 other police motorcycles.

Doyle, who police said is an experienced motorcycle rider, was transported by a Life Star helicopter to Westchester Medical Center.

As Doyle's ambulance was passing through West Haven on I-95, several representatives from the fire department were on hand to see the caravan through.

"Welcome home Officer Doyle!!!," West Haven Professional Firefighters- IAFF Local 1198 posted on Facebook. "It was our honor to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters of the West Haven Police Department as well as countless citizens for your home coming today. We will continue to send well wishes and prayers for the rest of your healing journey. We stand with you Officer Doyle!"
