CONSERVATION, LAND USE, WATERSHED, and ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION ISSUES

DISASTER RELIEF FUNDS FOR CONNECTICUT FARMERS: Governor Ned Lamont and Connecticut Agriculture Commissioner Hulburt announced that the application period for Disaster Relief Funds for Connecticut Farmers to cover losses from severe weather events the state experienced in 2023 and 2024 is now open until October 7, 2026. Eligible farmers can apply through the Farm Recovery and Support Block Grant Program by visiting Farm Recovery and Support Block Grant.

PUBLIC SAFETY

CYBERSECURITY UPDATE: As the Emergency Management Director, I urge every member of our community to maintain heightened vigilance regarding cybersecurity. Today's digital threats are increasingly sophisticated, often targeting individuals to gain access to critical infrastructure, local businesses, and personal finances. Cyber awareness is no longer just an IT concern—it is a vital component of our public safety and community resilience. Cyber-attacks are a concern for everyone. Pause before you click! By staying alert to phishing attempts, securing your home networks, and questioning unexpected requests for personal information, you act as our first line of defense. Talk to your children. Protecting our households requires more than just securing our own accounts; we must also actively safeguard our children, who are increasingly targeted by sophisticated online scammers using gaming platforms, social media, and deceptive ads. I urge every resident to have open, age-appropriate conversations with their kids about internet safety, teaching them never to share personal details or click on unfamiliar links. By building strong cyber habits at home, we protect our families and strengthen our entire community against these evolving digital hazards. Together, we can safeguard our community's digital landscape and ensure we remain secure, prepared, and resilient against evolving threats. THIS IS FALLS PREVENTION WEEK

Falls Prevention Week is an important reminder that many falls can be prevented with a few simple precautions. In Connecticut, falls are a leading cause of serious injury among older adults. In 2023 alone, 411 Connecticut adults age 65 and older died from falls and more than 36,500 required hospital care; more than 43% of fall-related hospital admissions among older adults involved a hip fracture. Simple steps can make a big difference: remove loose rugs and clutter, improve lighting, install handrails and grab bars, wear supportive non-slip footwear, stay active to maintain strength and balance, have your vision and hearing checked regularly, and ask your healthcare provider to review medications that may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Take a few minutes this week to look around your home—or the home of someone you love—and identify a fall hazard before it becomes an injury. This week, every Easton household received a postcard with a QR code for easy registration. Please take a moment to sign up today and stay connected in an emergency. Need help registering? • The next Conservation Public Hearing meeting regarding Saddle Ridge will be held on Monday, October 5^th, at 7:00 pm at the Easton Public Library Community Room.

ADDITIONAL FLOOD RECOVERY INFORMATION

Additional resources are available for Easton residents recovering from the recent flooding, including information on insurance claims, documenting damage, utility and local services, and potential disaster assistance. The Connecticut Insurance Department is available to answer insurance-related questions, and residents are encouraged to report flood damage to DEMHS to help document the extent of the storm damage and determine eligibility for potential assistance. MEET THE TOWN TEAM: NANCY LAHOUD

Nancy Lahoud | Part-time Assistant Tax Collector

Please join us in getting to know Nancy Lahoud, our part-time Assistant Tax Collector, who has been part of the Town of Easton team for 1 year and 4 months. Nancy helps prepare and mail real estate, motor vehicle, and personal property tax bills, processes tax payments and refunds, handles Assessor certificate credit changes, and assists residents by phone and in person.

Favorite Part of the Job: “I enjoy the interaction with the public.” What I Love About Easton: “I love that everyone knows each other. It’s a small town, and it has that small-town warmth that just pulls you in.” Fun Fact: Nancy is the proud ‘Mema’ to three amazing grandchildren!

EASTON’S HISTORY: The Aspetuc Chronicles

Curious about what life was like in Easton and Weston nearly 200 years ago? The Aspetuc Chronicles: Narratives of Former Days in Easton and Weston, Connecticut, by John Dimon Bradley (1819–1905), offers a fascinating firsthand look at 19th-century farm life and the local landscape before the creation of the Aspetuck Reservoir. Written from Bradley’s memories of growing up on his family farm, the book provides a glimpse into the people, places, work, and everyday experiences that shaped our community in an earlier era. The Easton Library has three copies available in its nonfiction collection, making this a wonderful opportunity to explore a piece of our town’s history.

Easton has a variety of resources to support residents, including assistance with fuel, food, childcare, summer camps, senior services, housing, and community programs. Social Services Director Daniel Simonelli is here to help connect residents with the resources they need. His office is at the Easton Senior Center, Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Appointments at other times can be arranged (203-268-1137). All conversations are confidential. If you need help, please reach out—you don’t have to navigate it alone.

2026 REVALUATION INSPECTIONS UPDATE: The 2026 Real Estate Revaluation process has entered the Market Analysis and Valuation Phase. The revaluation company will continue conducting resident-requested inspections and active building permit inspections throughout the process. For additional information, please visit the Revaluation page on the Town website. Residents are also encouraged to visit the Town’s Property Taxes Explained page to learn more about how property taxes are determined. EVENTS AROUND TOWN

JAMES PROSEK: GROWING UP IN EASTON – On Friday, September 25th, at 7:00 pm, local artist and author James Prosek will be giving a free talk about his life and work and how growing up in Easton was an influence. The talk will be at the Congregational Church in the Easton Church Hall, 336 Westport Road. Doors open at 6:30 and the talk begins at 7 pm. Please register online to make sure you have a seat at an event that is sure to sell out!

MILL RIVER RESTORATION RIBBON-CUTTING. Phase 1 of the Nutmeg Chapter Trout Unlimited Mill River restoration project is complete! Nearly half a mile of the river along Congress Street has been enhanced with new pools, boulder features, riffles, and improved trout habitat. Join us for a ribbon-cutting and stream-side walk on Saturday, September 26, at 11:00 AM, beginning at the Covenant Church parking lot. Bring the family—and your fishing rod! Fly rods will be available for demonstrations. Nutmeg Trout Unlimited is also offering a dollar-for-dollar donation match up to $4,500 to support continued restoration and stewardship of the Mill River.

COMEDY NIGHT AT NOTRE DAME OF EASTON: Get ready for an evening of laughter, fun, and raffles at the Comedy Night fundraiser on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Deacon Sabol Hall at Notre Dame of Easton, 655 Morehouse Road! Doors open at 6:00 PM, with dinner served from 6:30–7:30 PM, followed by comedy from 7:30–9:00 PM. Enjoy a delicious BYOB dinner and a night of comedy featuring headliner Billy Winn and featured comedian Paul Taro, with host and opening act Rick Roberts. Tickets are $45 per person, with an early reservation discount of $40 per person through September 7. VIP seating is also available for $60 per person and is limited to 12 people. NEIGHBORFEST 2026: Neighbors and Friends, please join us for our Easton NeighborFest 2026 on Sunday, September 27, 3-6 pm at the Covenant Church, 1 Sport Hill Rd. All are welcome to join us and bring your lawn chairs. We will have the Me’Stezo Grill Food Truck serving an Oktoberfest menu and hot dogs & fries for kids. Music provided by Jim Savage on keyboard and Noah on steel drums. We will have FREE grilled corn and ice cream. Games for ages 5- 15 provided by the Easton Community Center. This event is sponsored by the Easton Diversity & Inclusion Task Force.

SAT/ACT PRACTICE TEST FOR GRADES 9-12 WITH C2 EDUCATION on Thursday, October 1, at 3:30 PM. C2 Education will be at the Easton Public Library to offer a free SAT or ACT practice test. Families can schedule one-on-one appointments with Susan Joshua to review their test results, either virtually or at her Westport office. A caregiver’s email is required to schedule the results session, and caregivers are expected to attend the session with their child. *Note: The SAT & ACT are now digital, and these practice tests will be as well. Registrants need a device (no tablets or phones), Library WiFi, and a Brightspace account (provided by C2). Registration is required.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY FARM BUREAU ANNUAL MEETING: The Fairfield County Farm Bureau will hold its Annual Meeting on Monday, October 5, at the Homestead Farm of Jones Family Farms, 606 Walnut Tree Hill Road, Shelton. The evening will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by a farm-to-table dinner featuring products from many Fairfield County farms. This year’s keynote speaker is Sean Fitzpatrick, Executive Director of Real Food CT, which works to strengthen local agriculture and increase food access through farmer partnerships, volunteer engagement, and workforce development. “JAZZ… WHAT IT IS!” Roger Kaufman and the Old School Jazz All Stars featuring The Tim DeHuff Quintet will be performing again at the Congregational Church Hall, 336 Westport Rd., on October 15 at 7:00 pm. They were fantastic in April, and many asked when they'd be returning. They're calling this performance "Jazz ... What it is!" Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. FALL FARM-TO-TABLE COOKING DEMONSTRATION on Saturday, October 17, at 2:00 pm at the Library. Back by popular demand, Chef Deja from Khemi's Vegan Cuisine will present a cooking demonstration highlighting fresh fall produce from the local farms. SOUTHEASTERN FAIRFIELD COUNTY COMMUNITY RESOURCE FAIR. Residents are invited to attend the Southeastern Fairfield County Community Resource Fair on Saturday, October 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport (Beacon Hall, 2nd Floor Events Center, 900 Lafayette Blvd., Bridgeport, CT 06604). Attendees can access free health screenings and services, as well as information and assistance related to behavioral health, substance abuse, housing, employment, food assistance, education, reentry services, and more. There will also be activities for children.

STAPLES ACADEMY FOUNDATION PRESENTS THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HALLOW on Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 pm. Master Storyteller Jonathan Kruk returns to Easton, this time to give his one-man performance of Sleepy Hollow just in time for Halloween. This performance will be in the Congregational Church of Easton, 290 Center Road. Doors open at 7:00 pm, performance begins at 7:30 pm. SCARECROW PALOOZA ON MOREHOUSE! Easton Park & Recreation invites residents, schools, and local businesses to design and build their own unique scarecrows. All creations will be displayed on the split-rail fencing at Morehouse Field for the Trunk or Treat celebration on Friday, October 30. Here is how to join the fun:

1. Register: Sign up at the Easton Recreation Website (the first 10 entries get a free hay bale!).
2. Set Up: Attach your scarecrow to the fencing at Morehouse Field.
3. Submit: Email a photo of your setup with your name to eastonpr@eastonct.gov to get your official judging number.

TRUNK OR TREAT - Friday, October 30, 5:30 pm (Please note: not on Halloween!) Join Easton Park & Recreation and The Lions Club on Friday, October 30 for our Annual Trunk or Treat & Bonfire! Music and snacks will be provided, as well as sparring and performance by Knights of Gore. Trunk or Treat set-up: 4:30-5:30 pm at Samuel Staples Parking Lot (to register a trunk, please email: eastontrunkortreat@gmail.com). Bonfire and Costume Contest: 6:00 pm at Morehouse Fields. So come on down with your costumes & have some Fun!
