CT NAACP, Redding Police Meeting on Suspicious Death of Black Lawyer Postponed

Redding lawyer Abe Dabela was found shot in the head after a car accident in Redding last year and his family says his death is suspicious.

A meeting between Connecticut NAACP officials and police regarding what his family is calling the suspicious death of Abe Dabela has been postponed, according to NBC CT News.

Gugsa Abraham “Abe” Dabela was found with a gunshot wound to the head in his car near his Redding home last year after an automobile accident. The NAACP and the family said in a release that questions remain about Dabela’s death include why his DNA wasn’t found on the trigger of the gun found at the crash site and why it was ruled suicide if the bullet wound was to the back of his head and not the side.

Dabela’s family and the Connecticut chapter of the NAACP has opened their own investigation in the death of the 35-year-old black man last month. The family launched a website, www.justice4abe.com, and issued a public appeal for help in solving the case.

The family said in a press release that he was found “just minutes after he was, from reports, cheerfully mingling with friends and passing out business cards for his new law practice.”

The meeting between the CT NAACP and Redding Police Chief Douglas Fuchs was originally planned for Monday but was rescheduled because of concerns about Hurricane Joaquin, according to NBC CT News. The meeting has been postponed until Oct. 22 and is not open to the public.
