Farmers all over the New England colonies once brewed beer and ales as a routine part of running the farmhouse kitchen. Immigrants from England, Germany, & Eastern Europe brought with them varieties of hops which thrived in the Hudson Valley, Connecticut & New Hampshire. They had abundant local grains to brew with: corn, barley, wheat, and rye, and they flavored their beers and ales with berries, herbs, honey, and even pumpkins. Making beer was one of the first locally produced artisinal foods.
Today brewing is a great hobby that can be done easily at home and does not require a huge investment in time or equipment. This workshop will teach you all the steps necessary to produce a 5 gallon batch of delicious fresh beer in your own kitchen, You’ll learn what equipment is needed, where to buy ingredients, how to brew the beer, and how to ferment, bottle and age it.
