'Overcame The Challenge Of Scoliosis': Weston Star Student

We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Weston.

Katarina has over a 4.0 GPA, averaging an A in her classes, almost all of which have been honors and AP.

WESTON, CT — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Alex Papric who nominated friend Katarina of Weston.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Katarina, a junior at Weston High School, has over a 4.0 GPA, averaging an A in her classes, almost all of which have been honors and AP. She is the Editor-in-Chief of her school newspaper, the Weston Warhorse, and has resurrected the paper into an online version from the pandemic. She is also co-captain of her school’s mock trial team. Katarina is on her Varsity Swim team and plays water polo for Greenwich Aquatics. She was selected to the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program’s Northeast Regional Team. Finally, Katarina, started a charitable organization called Scoli-Embrace, whose mission is to support young people diagnosed with scoliosis. She herself has the condition and had spinal fusion surgery when she was 12 but never let it stand in the way of her many academic and athletic achievements.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

She is a warrior and overcame the challenge of scoliosis and spinal surgery to become a star athlete and is driven to pursue a career in law, hoping to advocate for those less fortunate.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Katarina!
