Three Generations of Local Family Featured in Art Exhibit
Over 80 mixed media works by Meadow Ridge's Ed MacEwen, his daughter, and granddaughters on display
Redding, Conn. – Former Wilton Library Art Chairman and current Meadow Ridge resident Ed MacEwen recently showcased his work at Wilton Library in a special family exhibit titled “Generations,” on view during September. The exhibition also featured artwork by his daughter, Bonnie MacEwen Sailer, and granddaughters, Jesse and Katie Sailer. With more than 80 pieces on display, from finely detailed watercolor paintings to intricate cardboard sculptures, “Generations” highlighted the artistic talent and shared creative spirit of the MacEwen family, offering a peek into the places they've been and the lives they’ve led.
“My mother never studied art, but her family is a family of artists. I have done art throughout my life,” said Ed MacEwen. “I guess the genes just flew down the line.”
Following his retirement as a graphic designer from GTE Corporation in 1996, Ed spent nearly three decades leading Wilton Library’s art exhibitions. He had a hand in installing more than 150 shows and created art that will forever live on the walls of the library. Ed and Bonnie painted multiple murals in the Children’s Library and Ed designed a 128-foot mural located in the book cellar that patrons may have seen during the Spring and Autumn Book Sales. Since moving to Meadow Ridge earlier this year, Ed has also participated in an exhibition featuring his art at the community.

“We are so pleased to welcome a new resident to the community who brings not only artistic talent but also a generous spirit,” said Meadow Ridge Campus Executive Director Chris Barstein. “Ed’s willingness to share his work with others through art exhibits both at Meadow Ridge and in the community at large adds to the vibrant and creative atmosphere we value so much.”
“For over two decades, Ed MacEwen and family have spent countless hours dedicating their time, talent, and hearts to Wilton Library,” said Wilton Library Art Show Coordinator Katie Nelson. “They are as artistically talented as they are kind. The MacEwen family are pillars of the Wilton community, and we are honored to exhibit their artwork.”

“Art was ingrained in my life from day one. Being surrounded by art, artists, family artists and projects was just a way of life,” said Bonnie MacEwen Sailer, a retired art educator in the New Canaan public school district. When asked about recurring themes or techniques present in each person’s work, she noted the level of detail, craftsmanship and shared memories. “My dad’s insane detail with watercolors is mirrored in my and Jesse’s tiny details in our work. There is also a strong presence of Stone Harbor throughout all our work.”
“Generations” is Ed MacEwen’s fourth exhibit at Wilton Library and his second time showing work alongside his granddaughters. Reflecting on the experience of seeing three generations of art displayed together, Ed said, “I had a smile from ear to ear.”
Much of the work displayed was available for purchase, with some proceeds benefiting the Wilton Library.
