Weston Fire Department Warns of a Scam Involving Smoke Alarms

Scammers claim to be from official agencies to inform residents that their smoke alarms need to be tested. Once inside, they rob homeowners.

The Weston Volunteer Fire Department is warning of a scam.

The scammers claim to be from federal, state, or local agencies to inform residents that their smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors need to be inspected per state statute. Once inside, they steal items or case it for a later burglary.

The Weston Volunteer Fire Department states that “there is no state statute that authorizes anyone to randomly enter your home to make sure you have proper working smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. That is not to say you shouldn’t have them, but the police department, fire department or building department is not going to send someone to your door to randomly check your residence for working systems.”

The fire department warns that if you get a scam call or a home visit to “tell them you are all set. Call 911 and try to provide a good description of the suspects and their vehicle.”

The Weston Volunteer Fire Department is providing free inspections of residents’ smoke alarms and carbon monoxide systems. Call 203-222-2627 for more information .
