June 24, 2025 — (WESTON, Conn.) Eirene S. Allen Ph.D is many things: educator, writer, lover of all things Greece. The author’s special connection to Greek culture (her roots) — and the Classics at large — inspired her nonfiction release, The Epic Women of Homer: Exploring Women’s Roles in the Iliad and the Odyssey (Pen & Sword). Featuring original translations and a deep dive into the language of Homer, the book restores Homer’s goddesses and heroines to their esteemed positions in ancient Greece and reintroduces them to the modern world. The Weston Library will host Eirene’s author talk, “Homer’s Heroines: A Fresh Look” on Sunday, June 29 at 4:00 pm. Reservations are encouraged here: https://westonpl.librarycalendar.com/event/author-event-2097; walk-ins welcome. The Library is located at 56 Norfield Road, Weston.

“I look forward to returning to Weston Library for this talk on a subject close to my heart,” said Eirene. “The women in these timeless epics have so much to say to us about what it means to be a hero and how to work together as a community.”

Eirene holds a Ph.D from New York University in Teaching and Learning, with an emphasis on Literature and Media Education, and a MA in English Language and Literature. Her current research and instruction centers around the Homeric epics and their reception in contemporary literature for both children and adults. The author has taught at NYU, among other local colleges, and more recently founded the nonprofit, The Institute for Classics Education (classicseducation.com). The Institute strives to promote critical thinking skills for today’s landscape by teaching the classics of ancient Greece. Fundamental to the Institute’s objectives is supporting educators who teach ancient Greek classics in English translation. In addition to an occasional speaker series, Eirene leads the discussion groups and seminars and is the general editor of the Institute’s publications.

“In the past, lucky us, Eirene Allen has introduced several of our library’s book groups to the characters and themes found in the Odyssey, sharing her incredible knowledge with clarity and wit. We are looking forward to her new insights about Homer’s heroines,” said Susan Richard, Friends of the Weston Public Library board member
