Superintendent of Schools William S. McKersie issued this update on Wednesay sent Wednesday morning:

“Right now, please know that the sewage system problem is isolated to the area immediately in front of the Middle School and stretching across and along School Road. The problem appears to be in the external piping between the Middle School and the Zenon Plant.

“We have contained the leakage and cleanup processes are under way. We are coordinating with the Town of Weston and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. All clean-up and remediation will be done in strict accordance with best practices and laws.
“Please understand that we had to close the entire campus for two main reasons. First, when one building is closed, we typically close the other three schools due to staff management issues and family schedules. We have flexibility, however, if one building will be closed for multiple days. Second, once School Road had to be closed, it was not safe to have traffic coming onto campus with only one point of entrance or egress.

“We have been working full time (all day and night) since the problem was discovered at roughly 5:00 p.m. last night. Clean-up work continues, and CT DEEP must review and approve the clean-up.”
