1 Injured In Westport Crash When Stray Tire Shears Off Roof Of Car: FD

The driver was trapped in the damaged car after the crash and had to be extracted by Westport firefighters.

WESTPORT, CT — A driver was injured on Interstate 95 in Westport early Wednesday when "an errant tire from an unknown vehicle" struck a car and sheared off a substantial portion of the roof, according to Westport Assistant Fire Chief Jeffrey Gootman.

The crash occurred just after 3 a.m. southbound between exits 17 and 16, and it left the driver of the damaged car — a 52-year-old Bronx, New York, man — suffering from unknown injuries.

After firefighters responded to the scene, they found the driver trapped inside the 2019 Toyota Camry; firefighters had to use extrication equipment to free the driver before Westport EMS transported him to Norwalk Hospital for treatment.

"The impact caused Operator 1 to lose control, striking the metal beam guardrail in the right shoulder," said Connecticut State Police, which is investigating the crash. "The
roadway was dry and paved with no adverse conditions existing. Damage to approximately 15 feet of metal beam guardrail in the right shoulder was reported."
