2 People Killed, Including A Westport Woman, In Wrong-Way Crash: CSP

The four-vehicle crash occurred Sunday night near Exit 2 on Route 8 in Bridgeport, according to Connecticut State Police.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — Two people were killed Sunday night in a wrong-way crash involving four vehicles on Route 8 in Bridgeport, according to Connecticut State Police.

One of the people killed, Westport resident Monica Wilson, died one day before her 42nd birthday, according to state police. Wilson was driving a vehicle when she was struck head-on by a van driving in the wrong direction near Exit 2.

Two boys who were riding in the vehicle, an 8-year-old and a 7-year-old, suffered injuries that are not considered to be a threat to their lives, according to state police. News 12 Connecticut reported that the two boys are Wilson's sons.

Also killed in the crash was a passenger in the van that was traveling in the wrong direction, 46-year-old Bridgeport resident Ananias Castillo-Icabalzeta, according to state police. The driver of the wrong-way van was Bridgeport resident Wilber Martinez, 35, who was seriously injured in the crash, state police said; he remains in critical condition in St. Vincent's Medical Center.

The crash occurred at about 8:30 p.m., and the head-on collision caused a chain reaction where two other vehicles, which were also traveling southbound behind Wilson's vehicle, were involved.

State police said the drivers of those two vehicles, a 19-year-old Bridgeport woman and a 39-year-old Bridgeport woman, both suffered minor injuries in the crash.

State police closed Route 8 for 5 hours following the crash on Sunday, while the state police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad investigated, and that team is continuing its efforts.

Sunday's crash was the second fatal, wrong-way crash in Bridgeport over the weekend. On Saturday, a 45-year-old passenger in a vehicle was killed in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 near Exit 26, according to state police. Two other people were injured in the crash.
