Abilis Offers LEAP Transition Info Session in Westport June 11
Transition Programming for Young Adults with Special Needs

Abilis, a non-profit organization that provides services and supports for more than 700 individuals with special needs and their families, will hold a special LEAP Transition Information Session in Westport on Tuesday, June 11, 2019, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., at the Saugatuck Congregation Church, 245 Post Road E, Westport, Connecticut. This event is free and open to the public. This event is about Abilis’ LEAP Transition Program that helps students transition to adulthood, living independently, finding a job and navigating the community. Registration is required and can be made at abilis.us/calendar. Abilis is offering this free information session for families to participate in an interactive discussion about Transition Programming for Young Adults with Special Needs. The goal of the Abilis community-based program is to help young adults become more independent, obtain meaningful jobs, and participate in community activities. Representatives from Abilis will provide an overview about its LEAP Transition Program, discuss the initial steps required to determine the potential programs and services a family member might consider, and review the vocational skills, life skills, cognitive social development, and community involvement that needs to be considered when living as an independent adult.
Some of the questions parents of special needs children often ask are, especially when their children are graduating from high school and embarking upon life as young adults are:

- What happens when my child reaches the age of 21 and ages out of the school district?

- Is my child prepared to live independently, find a job, and navigate the community?
The Abilis LEAP Transition Information Session attempts to answer these questions and more. Abilis offers multiple transition programs throughout Fairfield County in the towns of Greenwich, Stamford, Westport, Wilton and Ridgefield. A new Abilis location in New Canaan is planned for this summer.
