Artwork Of U.S. Olympian Julia Marino Unveiled In Westport

The Westport native won the Silver Medal in Women's Slopestyle Snowboarding at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

WESTPORT, CT — Julia Marino, the Olympic Silver Medalist and Westport native, has a new honor.

The 24-year-old now has a lenticular art piece featuring her hanging outside the Westport Train Station. She was at the unveiling on Monday, and said that she is excited that she will be able to walk by and see it when she eats at one of the nearby restaurants.

"This means a lot," Marino said. "It's cool to see how the town has really been so supportive of me. I'm very thankful."

Marino won the Silver Medal in Women's Slopestyle Snowboarding at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, and the artwork features two photos of her, one of her holding an American flag, and the other of her executing a "batwing" snowboard jump.

The artwork was created by local artist Miggs Burroughs at the request of the Westport Police Department. According to Chief Foti Koskinas, the department decided to hang it at the station because it is a high-traffic location where lots of people will be able to see it daily. It will hang at the station for a year and will then be given to Marino.

Burroughs said lenticular art involves a process where two images are combined digitally. A viewer can stand in one spot and see one image, and then move a few steps to the side and see the other image.

First Selectwoman Jennifer Tooker, who also attended the unveiling on Monday, said Marino is an inspiration to so many people, in Westport and beyond.

"She's not only an elite athlete, she's also a fabulous person," Tooker said. "She takes her position as a role model very seriously, and she gives a lot of time and energy to youth causes. We couldn't be more proud of her."
