Bullying Is the Topic of Upcoming Exhibition at Westport Arts Center
The exhibition looks at the idea of bullying within a broad cultural context.

WESTPORT, CT — A new exhibition coming to the Westport Arts Center this month will examine "the idea of bullying within a broad cultural context," according to organizers.
"More Than Words" will consider "how the imbalance of social, physical, or political power can marginalize those who are perceived as weaker." The exhibition opens on Sept. 9 at the center, located at 51 Riverside Ave. in Westport, and runs through Oct. 29. On the 9th, there will be a reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
"In its most immediate sense bullying evokes the arena of childhood but is even more destructive when it moves on to support a cultural homogeneity that tries to subjugate that which is outside; defining gender, race, religion, social class, etc. as negative attributes," the center writes in its description of the exhibit. "Bullying is harmful enough when confined to the schoolyard but its true impact is exponentially greater when these power differentials are played out within the social institutions of relationships, the workplace, politics and the world. Artists have long responded to these inequities through their work, able to speak truth to power in a way not available to others."
