Family Y Open House on MLK Day

In commemoration/celebration of Martin Luther King Jr., the Family Y is opening its doors on Monday, Jan. 16, so the entire community can participate for free in an array of programs and activities.

Here is a sampling of what we will be offering on Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday and school vacation day. Our hours are 5:30 am to 10 pm; for more information, click on the highlighted links, visit www.westporty.org or stop by our Member Services Desk on Monday, and we’ll get you and your family all set for your visit:

OPEN BASKETBALL: In our Upper Gym  ALL DAY, except for 6 – 8 pm; our lower gym is also open  ALL DAY, except for 9 am – 1:30 pm and 5 – 8 pm;

OPEN SWIM: Our shallow, warm-water (91 degrees!) Brophy pool is open for free swim 1:30 – 5:30 pm and 6:35 – 9 pm. There’s also recreational swimming in the Stauffer Shallows, 10 am – 6pm and lap swimming in the Stauffer Pool (as per our regular schedule).

FITNESS CLASSES: Be our guest to participate in any one of our regularly scheduled group fitness classes — yoga, spinning, zumba, body conditioning, qigong, stretch, cardio, etc. Please see our regular Monday schedule for specific times.

FITNESS CENTER: Both our Weight Room and Cardio Room will be open all day and night (5:30 am – 10 pm). Feel free to ask any of our fitness coordinators for help in getting familiar with our array of exercise equipment.

SCHOOL AGE PROGRAMS: Our Early Learning Program has something special on Monday for participants in our School Age Vacation Special — the Fun Bus! Designed to provide kids ages 2 through 7 a day of fitness fun on wheels, the Fun Bus is a full-sized school bus completely transformed with seats removed, into a fully padded, carpeted play center.  The children will enjoy group games and activities and, weather permitting, will be able to slide out the back door on the banana slide for having done a great job.

Although our youth classes are cancelled for the day, we will still have our Toddler Adventure Gym for kids ages 6 months to 4 years from 9 – 11 am; the cost is $10 per child. (Our  Gymnastics Competition Team will hold practice as scheduled on Monday.  In addition, all travel basketball teams will have their usual practice times.)

Please stop by our Pool Lobby on 59 Church Lane (follow the balloons), and we will have an information desk set up with brochures about our year-round programs, special programs for the February and April school breaks, as well as our two main summer programs: the Hafaday Summer Swim Lesson Program and Camp Mahackeno. Registration is already under way for both of these popular summertime traditions.
