Maxine Bleiweis, Director of the Westport Public Library, will address the Westport Rotary Club at noon on Tuesday, February 1, at the Inn at Longshore.
Bleiweis, who will discuss advances in technology at the library, is best known for her ability to predict trends and determine ways to meet the latest "customer" needs as they emerge. Before becoming director in Westport in 1998, she was the library director in Suffield, Conn., for 6 years and Newington, Conn., for 18 years.
Throughout Bleiweis's career, a hallmark of her philosophy has been keeping libraries at the forefront of meeting community needs. One of the earliest initiatives during her tenure in Westport was specifically to address the needs of the business community.
She shared much of her learning with other professionals in her highly
respected book, Helping Business: The Public Library's Role in Community Economic Development. In response to recent events, she has guided the library to enhance its services for jobseekers.
In the 21st century, she continues to be a pioneer, now by exploring
what libraries can do best in the digital age.
