Closure Of I-95 In Norwalk Will Impact Westport This Weekend: UPDATE

A fuel truck crashed and caught fire on I-95 in Norwalk Thursday morning, causing massive traffic delays throughout the region.

Westport police issued the following updated statement Thursday evening about traffic this weekend, due to the closure of I-95 in Norwalk:

CT DOT has announced that they will start demolishing the damaged bridge in Norwalk tomorrow morning, May 3, 2024. I-95 will remain closed during the demolition phase, and they anticipate this phase lasting approximately 4 days with an expected re-opening of I-95 on Monday May 6, 2024.

Over the course of the next few days, the local roads in Westport will continue to be severely affected with increased vehicular traffic. We are urging anyone who does not need to travel to stay off the roads. If you need to travel, please give yourself extra time and be patient. We are also encouraging anyone traveling to and from Westport to use Metro North train service or alternate routes.

Westport roadways continue to be affected by the closure of I-95. We have been in communication with local authorities as they navigate the safe re-opening of the Interstate. As of 1:00 pm, I-95 remains closed with no estimated time of re-opening. Traffic in Westport will remain extremely heavy through the evening commute, and most likely in the days to come. The I-95 closure will have a lasting effect on traffic, and we urge those who do not need to travel to stay off the roads.
