Historic Westport House on the Market

The historic Clifton Avenue house was built by Minerva Parker Nichols, one of the country's first women architects, according to a report.

The economic crisis has resulted in an increase in the number of historic — and sometimes famous — Fairfield County homes on the market.

Case in point: An historic Clifton Avenue house built by Minerva Parker Nichols, one of the country's first women architects, is currently listed by Jillian Klaff Homes, an affiliate of William Raveis Real Estate.

According to an article in the Westport News, the 2,209-square-foot colonial, built in 1929, “contains many interesting features in each room, including the multiple exposed wood beams in several rooms, the two built-in corner shelves in the dining room and a wide stone fireplace in the living room.”

The vintage house has a place in U.S. architectural history: According to the article, Nichols was “the first woman to establish a successful American architectural practice in the late 19th century.” Then single, she reportedly designed the house for her daughter, Adelaide Nichols Baker, and her daughter's husband, John Baker, without any assistance from others, which was practically unheard of at the time.

The article offers an extensive description of the house, which is currently listed at $650,000.
