Mask Mandate Lifted In Westport: First Selectman
First Selectman Jim Marpe has rescinded executive orders mandating masks in indoor public settings in Westport.

WESTPORT, CT — First Selectman Jim Marpe announced Thursday afternoon he has rescinded executive orders mandating masks in indoor public settings in Westport.
In a statement, Marpe said the decision was made in collaboration with the COVID-19 Emergency Management Team due to the daily rate of coronavirus cases in town trending down over the past few weeks. He also noted Westport continues to be in the "gray" category, signifying less than five cases per 100,000 in town.
"This is certainly an optimistic trend," Marpe said in a statement, "one that we have been anxious to announce, but we continue to be aware of the potential of stronger strains and breakthrough cases that could impact future recommendations. Those who are eligible are strongly encouraged to get fully vaccinated and/or receive a booster."

A statement was also provided by Westport Weston Health District Director of Health Mark Cooper, who voiced the district's support of Marpe's decision.
"We are in support of this action for those in the lower risk category for severe COVID-19 illness and who have been vaccinated, so long as the local transmission rate remains low," Cooper said in a statement. "If everyone proceeds with caution and some common sense, we may be able to enjoy the coming holiday season with family and friends in a more traditional manner."

Cooper said masking is still highly recommended for those at higher risk of severe COVID-19 illness due to the virus still being present in the community despite a low transmission rate.
According to the state Department of Public Health:
- Outdoors
- Masks are not required to be worn by anyone.
- Indoors:
- Vaccinated individuals are generally not required to wear masks.
- Unvaccinated individuals must continue to wear masks.
- Masks will still be required in healthcare facilities, facilities serving vulnerable populations, public and private transit, correctional facilities, schools (public and non-public, when students are present) and childcare facilities.
- Some businesses, state and local government offices, performance spaces and certain events may still require universal masking.
"Your cooperation, patience and understanding is appreciated when visiting Westport establishments and locations where mask requirements remain in effect," Marpe said, "or where some may choose to maintain a full mask policy for the health and safety of their staff and customers. The emergency management team will continue its oversight of the pandemic and the effects it may have on the health and safety of all Westport residents, businesses and visitors."
