Former Police Chief Ron Malone, 2 Dogs Rescued From Westport House Fire

The blaze was reported early Monday morning.

WESTPORT, CT — Former Westport Police Chief Ron Malone - and two dogs - were rescued from a fire at his home at 189 Cross Highway in Westport early Monday morning, according to fire officials.

Malone, who was trapped inside the residence with the dogs, was pulled from the fire through a first-floor window by Westport police officers, just as firefighters arrived at about 6 a.m. He was transported to Norwalk Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

All 11 Westport firefighters and 4 officers on-duty responded to the blaze, along with police officers and EMS personnel.

"The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time by the Fire Marshal’s Office," wrote Assistant Chief Michael Kronick in a statement. "Firefighters from Fairfield assisted at the fire providing additional manpower."

The Westport Fire Department would like to remind Westport residents the importance of having working smoke detectors in their home. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home. Install alarms in the basement. If any resident is in need of assistance with changing detector batteries or installing new ones, they may call 203-341- 5010 to arrange for someone to come to their home to do so (no fee).
