Prescription Drug Take Back Day Scheduled In Westport

WESTPORT, CT — Prescription Drug Take Back Day for 2026 will be held at the Westport Center for Senior Activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 25, according to officials.

The annual event is sponsored by the federal Drug Enforcement Administration, as part of the DEA's national initiative.

DEA and its partners will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and
other solid forms of prescription drugs. The Westport Police Department and other collection sites will not accept syringes, sharps, or illicit drugs. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container; the cap must be tightly sealed to prevent leakage.

Take Back Day offers free and anonymous disposal of unneeded medications at the Westport site, and at close to 5,000 other local drop-off sites nationwide.

The event has helped Americans easily rid their homes of unneeded medications—those that are old, unwanted, or expired—that too often become a gateway to addiction. The collected medications will be disposed of at several incineration facilities located throughout New England that will convert the pharmaceutical waste into clean, renewable energy for use by local communities.

Since 2010, this initiative has resulted in over 1.9 million pounds of pharmaceutical waste collected over 29 drug take-back events in New England.

Residents are also reminded there is a year-round collection bin located in the lobby of Westport Police Headquarters, so drugs can be properly disposed of at any time rather than waiting for designated collection dates.

"We also have a supply of medication disposal bags in our lobby, which can be used for proper disposal of liquid and pill form medications in the regular garbage per the instructions."
