Update: Saugatuck Railroad Station Parking Lot Construction Begins July 11

Town officials hope to minimize impact on commuters.

Updated: Westport officials announced that the station parking lot project will begin on July 11:

On Monday July 11th , 2016 construction will begin at the Lot 1 Saugatuck Rail Road Station. Alternate parking locations have been created to alleviate the loss of parking spaces while the construction is being completed.

Commuters are reminded to allocate 5 to 10 additional minutes to their morning commute on Monday to become accustomed to the new parking areas.

Lot 1 will be closed on Saturday July 9th ; Vehicles remaining in the lot will be towed at the owner’s expense. Lot 1 will not reopen until the projected completion date of after Labor Day 2016. Temporary permit parking has been put in place at both the Saugatuck and Greens Farms stations.

During the construction we encourage commuters to utilize the existing shuttle service that runs from the Imperial Avenue parking lot to the door of the Saugatuck train station whenever possible. The link to the schedule for the shuttle is listed below. The Railroad Parking Division has been working with the Transit District to expand shuttle service if the need and ridership call for it.

The Department apologizes for any disruption or inconvenience this may cause the commuting public in the short term; however the new lot will enhance the commuting experience for years to come.

Additional police personnel will be on hand to assist commuters throughout the project and access to areas affected will be restored as the project progresses and public safety can be ensured.

Original Announcement: The following announcement is from Westport Deputy Police Chief Sam Arciola concerning the upcoming parking lot improvement project at the Saugatuck Railroad Station:

Important news for Westport train station customers regarding the upcoming Saugatuck Lot #1 project:

  • Contracts have been signed and we hope to begin construction in the parking lot in early July.
  • We do not plan on closing the parking lot to commuters until construction begins. This does mean that closure may occur with limited notice.
  • Once the parking lot is closed, temporary permit parking will be available across Saugatuck Avenue at the rear of Lot #8. If needed, additional spaces will be provided at other areas as indicated on the map.
  • During construction we encourage commuters to utilize the existing shuttle service that runs from the Imperial Avenue parking lot to the door of the Saugatuck train station whenever possible. The schedule for the shuttle is located further down on this page. The Railroad Parking Division has been working with the Transit District to expand shuttle service if the need and ridership is there.
  • Additional permit parking areas will be opened up at Greens Farms station.
