No Power, Closed Roads In Darien, Westport, Norwalk, New Canaan

DARIEN, CT — Trees and power lines in Darien, Norwalk, New Canaan and Westport were knocked down during two strong thunderstorms that swept through the area Sunday, leaving thousands of Eversource utility customers without electricity.

As of 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, 1,021 Eversource customers in Darien were without power, 2,265 in Norwalk, 441 in New Canaan and 2,126 in Westport, according to the company.

A downed tree closed a portion of I-95 near the Darien/Norwalk border on Sunday afternoon, the State Department of Transportation announced.

In Norwalk, the police department alerted residents of a host of downed trees and wires throughout the city on Sunday:

Across the state, more than 14,000 were without power Sunday as the storms swept through region after region.

On Saturday, a similar heavy evening thunderstorm knocked down a tree onto a home in Westport, and downed wires caused a brush fire. Storm damage from Saturday resulted in Sherwood Island State Park in Westport being closed on Sunday, reports the Westport News.

Westport police issued the following traffic advisory Sunday afternoon with all the temporary road closures due to downed trees and wires:

Due to severe afternoon storms, the Town suffered several road closures and downed power lines. As a result of power outages, traffic control signals are not functioning at many major intersections including the intersections of Post Road East at Compo Road, Hillspoint Road and the Sherwood Island Connector. Portable stop signs have been deployed at various locations.

We urge residents to stay home as the clean-up and repairs are conducted. If you must be on the
road, please drive with caution and do not attempt to go around police tape and/or barricades. All
Town agencies are diligently working to alleviate these conditions in partnership with
Eversource.
