Seymour Couple Accused of Falsely Enrolling Daughter in Westport School

Westport school officials are reportedly seeking to recoup $27,911 in tuition from Christopher Kieras and his ex-wife Maria for allegedly falsely enrolling their daughter at Kings Highway Elementary School during the 2010-11 and 2009-10 school years.

According to a report in The New Haven Register, school officials are seeking to recoup $27,911 in tuition from Christopher Kieras and his ex-wife Maria for allegedly enrolling their daughter at Kings Highway during the 2010-11 and 2009-10 school years, even through they were living in Seymour.

The district is reportedly trying to recoup triple the amount of tuition set for those school years, as a punitive measure, according to the report.

During a Board of Education meeting last June, when tuition rates were set, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Elliott Landon said the Westport school district is not inclined to bring criminal charges against people who illegally enroll their children in the Westport Public Schools, such as when Norwalk brought , who enrolled her son at Brookside Elementary School in Norwalk when she was living in Bridgeport. Rather, he said, it is the district’s preference to simply bill them for the full cost of tuition.

Last year the district billed couple , who also faced charges in an alleged $3.5 million mortgage scam, $14,000 for reportedly enrolling their daughter in a Westport elementary school while living in Norwalk.

Earlier this month . Landon said this year's figures represent a 2.17 percent increase, in keeping with the general budget increase.

Recently the board adopted a tiered pricing model with tuition rates set the elementary, middle and high schools set separately. The full non-resident tuition for an elementary school student is now $14,663; the rate for a middle school student is $20,532; and the rate for a high school student is $21,990.
