Staples In Driver's Seat To Reach FCIAC Championship Game
Wreckers lead fellow unbeatens New Canaan and Greenwich in FCIAC standings
After the dust - make that the snow - had cleared from the weekend, the Staples and New Canaan football teams emerged as being in the driver's seat to clash in the FCIAC titlegame Nov. 18 at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium.
Staples (6-0),New Canaan (7-0) and Greenwich (6-0) all remained unbeaten ,but the Rams head the FCIAC rankings with a rating of 128.6, putting them slightly ahead of Staples' mark of 128.3. Greenwich is third at 115.0.
The FCIAC uses a system similiar to the one the CIAC utilizes to determine the state playoff participants. Teams received 100 points for each win and 10 points for each victory achieved by an opponent it has beaten.

Here are the remaining schedules for the threeteams:

--New Canaan -- Stamford (4-2), Trumbull (2-4) Minimum points available: 260
-- Greenwich -- McMahon (3-4), Danbury (4-3) Minimum points available: 270
If the three teams win out and not taking into account the outcome of any other games, here's what the final rankings would look like:
New Canaan (currently 890 points) == 1,150 points, 127.8 (9 nine games)
Staples (currently 770 points) == 1,010 points, 126.3 (8 games)
Greenwich (currently 690 points) == 960 points, 120.0 (8 games)
In this scenario, Greenwich would somehow have to make up 50 points on the Wreckers.
Greenwich and Staples have five common opponents (Bridgeport Central, McMahon, Danbury, Trumbull andWesthill.
Therefore to pass Staples, the other three teams the Cardinals defeated - Ridgefield, Bassick and Fairfield Ludlowe - would have to go 6-0 and the other three squads that Staples beat -- St. Joseph, Darien and Warde - would haveto go 0-6.
Of course, it is unlikely that Bassick and Ludlowe are goingto win their last two conference games since each is 0-7.
What it may boil down to for Greenwich is that the Cardinals would be hurt by playing a weaker schedule (three games teams that could end up going 0-10,Westhill dropped to 0-7 after Monday's 41-7 loss to Greenwich).
Barring any upsets over the next two weeks, Staples and New Canaan are on course to meet in the FCIAC championship game.
