Staples' Daniel Hirschberg won two matches Sunday without losing a game to advance to the semifinals of the state Open tennis championship at Hamden.
Hirschberg defeated Darien's Gavin McNulty 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, then bested Avon's Sam Flaxman by the same score in the quarterfinals.

In Tuesday's semifinals, Hirschberg will face Hand's Scott Rubinstein at Hamden at 3:30 p.m.. The final is set for Tuesday at Hamden.
Staples' doubles tandem of Baxter Stein and Evan Davis defeated Saagar Sinha and Jason Sittambalam of Avon 6-4, 6-3 in the quarterfinals, but lost to Fairfield Ludlowe's Daniel Adajian and Reid Andren 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Staples had two victories in the New England track and field championships Saturay in Burlington, Vermont.
The Wreckers won the 4x400 relay (Sean Gallagher, Jonathan Heil, Raphael-Andre Ray and John Roche) in a time of 3:19.26 and also took first in the girls pole vault as Lexie Schachne won with a jump of 11 feet, nine inches.
In addition, Staples finished third in the 4x800 relay (Roche, Gallagher, Henry Wynne and Walker Marsh) with a time of 7:50.55. Ray was second in the 400 meters (48.51).
Three Staples players boys lacrosse players have earned Class L all-state honors: Charlie Ross, second team attack; Kip Orban, first team midfield, Matt Yeager, first team defense.
The Wreckers lost to eventual state champion Ridgefield 10-3 in the semifinals.
-- Pat Murray, Chris Coyne and Jason Mawicke of Staples have been named to the Fairfield County All-Star team that will face the New Haven County All-Stars in the annual Hall of Fame Classic.
The 15th annual game is set for July 8 at West Haven's Ken Strong Stadium. Tickets cost $7 each and are available at the gate.
