Staples Scores and Standings: June 14

Staples' Daniel Hirschberg cruised into the finals of the state Open tennis championship Monday at Hamden by barely breaking a sweat.

He dispatched Scott Rubinstein of Avon 6-0, 6-0 in the finals to advance to Tuesday's final against Foran's Bradley Orban.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the match has been postponed to Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at Yale.  If weather problems persist, the match will be moved indoors.

Hirschberg has won seven of his nine matches in the Class L and state Open by 6-0, 6-0 scores including the last three.  In the nine matches he has lost a combined eight games.

-- Staples left fielder Brendan Bernstein has been named to the District II all-star team that will compete in the Connecticut High School Coaches Association All-Star baseball games on Tuesday at Plainville High School.

District III meets II at 5 p.m. June 14 and I plays IV at 7:30 with the two winners squaring off on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

The Junior Select game will be on Wednesday at 7:30. A selection committee of college coaches and scouts will pick the best 18 senior players for a game against a Massachusetts team June 26 at 1 at Plainville.
