Stratford Man ID'd in Fatal Westport Construction Site Accident

The victim died Tuesday afternoon.

Updated at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016: Westport police issued a correction to the previous release. Herbert Grant was not an employee of Suzio-York Hill Asphalt and Concrete Suppliers of Meriden; he was an independent contractor who hired the company to deliver concrete to the job site.

WESTPORT, CT — A 69-year-old Stratford man has been identified as the victim in Tuesday's fatal construction site accident in Westport.

Herbert S. Grant was working at a construction project at a residence on Country Lane "when he was fatally struck in the upper body by the boom extending off of the front of a concrete truck," according to Westport Police Lt. Eric Woods.

Grant, an independent contractor, was supervising the pouring of concrete at the time of the accident, which occurred at about 12:21 p.m. He had hired Suzio-York Hill Asphalt and Concrete Suppliers of Meriden to deliver concrete to the job site.

Members of the Westport Police Department Detective Bureau, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), state police, Fairfield and Trumbull police departments are involved in the on-going investigation.

Woods added that the "exact cause/manner of death will not be available until an investigation by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner."
