The Staples football team will face Newtown in the semifinals of the Class LL playoffs at Bunnell in Stratford. Saturday's contest kicks off at 2 p.m.
The Wreckers advanced to the semifinals with a 48-21 win over FCIAC rival Ridgefield as Jon Heil rushed for a school-record 366 yards and four touchdowns.
The sixth-seeded Nighthawks upset No. 3 seed Hall 36-22 to reach the semifinals.
The Staples-Newtown winner will face the Xavier-Norwalk winner next weekend at UConn's Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
The Wreckers have a three-pronged attack in the backfield that also includes leading rusher Joey Zelkowitz (876 yards) and Nick Kelly (667 yards). Following his spectacular performance on Tuesday, Heil doubled his season total to 730 yards.
Combined, the three backs have rushed for nearly 2,300 yards this season.
Zelkowitz did not play against Ridgefield as he still was feeling the affects of a shoulder separation suffered against Fairfield Warde on Nov. 5, although the extra days off could make him ready for Newtown.
The Nighthawks will be the underdog against Staples, but they rebounded in impressive fashion against Hall after losing to Masuk 46-7 the day before Thanksgiving.
Newtown’s tandem of Lou Fenaroli and Dan Hebert combined for four touchdowns and nearly 250 yards rushing in the second half against Hall. The 225-pound Fenaroli is a force, having rushed for more 1,700 yards this season.
The Nighthawks scored 22 unanswered points after Hall had taken a 20-14 lead early in the third quarter.
It was Newtown's first state playoff win since 1992, when the Nighthawks won the state championship
