Westport Board of Selectmen Make Decision on Saugatuck Sewer Extension
The sewer extension would serve a proposed 155-unit rental housing complex on Hiawatha Lane Extension.

WESTPORT, CT — The Board of Selectmen Wednesday voted to deny a request for a sewer extension under the Saugatuck River that would have served a proposed 155-unit rental housing complex on Hiawatha Lane Extension.
Voting against the extension were First Selectman Jim Marpe and Selectwoman Helen Garten, while Second Selectman Avi Kaner voted in favor, reports Westport Now.
The reason for the denial again came down to the fragile nearby sewage pipe that derailed the project in the past. Town officials largely believe the pipe, which is in need of replacing, could not withstand the added sewage flow the new housing complex would cause.

The selectmen acknowledged, however, that once the pipe is replaced, the developers will likely come back with a new application for the project.
