Westport Commission on People with Disabilities Seeks Members
The newly established group will consist of seven members serving two-year terms.

WESTPORT, CT — The town's newly established Commission on People with Disabilities is seeking members, First Selectman Jim Marpe announced.
The commission’s mission is "to ensure that Westport is a Town where people with disabilities have the opportunity and support to enjoy full and equal access to lives of independence, productivity, inclusion and self-determination."
A total of seven members will serve two-year terms renewable to a maximum of eight years (i.e. four two-year terms). Applicants must be registered voters in Westport.

Residents interested in being appointed to the group and other possible candidates can include, but are not limited to: Self-advocates, caregivers, parents/family members, professionals serving the disability community and other residents with a desire to educate and advocate for people with disabilities in Westport.
Commission goals include creating a forum for community members to:

- Increase awareness about issues and opportunities affecting people with disabilities
- Advise Town officials on policies, procedures, programs and services (including facilities)
- Provide information and guidance to individuals, businesses and organizations on matters related to disabilities
- Foster and promote a community dialogue with businesses, community organizations, clubs and associations
- Engage people with disabilities and their families, encouraging them to participate in Town government and planning.
It is expected that the Commission will meet during the work week on a monthly basis beginning this fall. Dates and times for meetings will be announced at a later date, with the expectation of regular attendance and approximately 3-4 hours per month of Commission-related work as the new Commission establishes its focus.
The Commission will be supported by the Town’s professional Human Services Department staff.
