Westport Farmers' Market Offers Food, Crafts, Gardening Lessons And More

On opening day, attendance was steady throughout the morning as people came to view and eat,

Lori Cochran was happy this morning.

As the new director of the Westport Farmers' Market, she was pleased that the rain held off, the clouds parted, the sun appeared and attendance was steady during the market's opening today.

The market will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Thursday through November 21 at the Imperial Avenue Commuter Parking Lot.

"Attendance has been steady throughout the morning," she reported. "And, people are definitely taking advantage of our new prepared food vendors as well was out outdoor seating area, where they can sit, eat and meet with friends."

Westport Selectman Shelley Kassen joined Cochran at today's ribbon-cutting/opening ceremonies, which took place at 11 a.m. Supporters of the market were recognized, including Bobby LaRose, Westport Downtown Merchants Association; Rebecca Howe, who helped to organize the seasonal event; Marshall Mayer of MXEnergy,  and Dan Levinson of the Green Village Initiative.

The market attracted the attention of those seeking a bite to eat.

Prepared foods at this year's market include tamales and wood-fired pizzas. Bill Rizutto, owner of Rizzutoi's Westport, was the guest chef. He offered samples of a freshly made endive salad that made use of blueberries and strawberries, all provided by vendors at the market. Guest chefs will appear each week. Burger, Bar & Bistro, of Norwalk, will be featured at next week's market.

This year's market also will include entertainment, artists, craftsmen, nonprofit exhibitions, gardening classes, produce farmers, bakers, cheese makers, spice/herb growers, grains, meat and poultry, seafood, honey, tea/coffee, yogurt and milk, fruit juices, cakes/pies, chocolates, seedlings and potted plants, and more.

The Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce invites the public to a special preview of the 2010 Westport Farmers' Market Season with a reception at the Boathouse at the Saugatuck Rowing Club, 521 Riverside Avenue, from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 15. Executive Chef John Holzwarth will present a special market preview menu and wine reception highlighting The Boathouse's Farm-to-Table menu items.

Featured farmers/artisans include: Two Guys from Woodbridge (produce), The Little Chocolate Factory, Wave Hill Bread, and Ladies of Levita Cheeses.
